Yesterday was pretty alright…

Had a celebratory breakfast at the gorge, a local cafe that looks like the inside of a stomach and does the biggest, cheapest portions I’ve ever seen (apart from maybe that dodgy chip shop on brick lane where almost anything is 90p). Made the most of my last day with a student discount. Took a long bath in excellent company. Finally watched Ironman 3 at the cinima. Turned on my Phone to a barrage of text messages. Watched web pages load agonisingly slowly on Jons phone. Got a first. Watched Star trek into darkness with 3 of my favourite people. Got home to find one of my lovely flat mates had brought home a bunch of gorgeous cloths, unwanted by other art students, to sell for almost no money. Then I got to sleep in an actual real life bed for the first time in bloody weeks (Pre-deadlines I sleep with my work on the sofa to minimise time not working and disturbing Jons sleep) AND it came with free cuddles…

… it was a perfectly adequate day.

Final eye tracking calibration.

The idea is to align these crop marks with a corresponding dusky pink one controlled by eye tracking software to help it calibrate your position to the screen and improve accuracy… and at the end you unlock the 1 with a / and enter the site.

Engaging with any information is a collaborative event and an act of authorship on the part of the reader. As you take in any data it is filtered through your unique perception and subtly changed to create your own personal understanding. It becomes something new to which you have contributed.

Should you pass this information on again, it will be re-flitered through the limitations of language, the medium of communication and the context with in which it is delivered before it even reaches another perception to create new understanding. We live in a world of Chinese whispers, filtered and embellished by our information delivery systems and the compilation of experiences, ideas and understandings that make up those that feed them.

Think back to an example of your own personal understanding of the conflict between intention and perception. Everyone has one (if you recon you don’t you must be a damn telepath… and good for you! That’s super kewl, we should hang out sometime). Someone hearing something other than what you had hoped to be saying and you’re court in that moment of realisation. You don’t quite feel like you can trust your words not to make it worse any more and find yourself tripping over your nervous tongue crippled by the unexpected hurt or anger in your recipients eyes. Saying “that sounded wrong” or “that’s not what I meant” seems trite and insincere in your panic…

Because of that moment, no one understands what I mean quite the way you do, and in its way that’s kind of beautiful.

Mark I’m working on based on ‘one of one’ (edition numbering) heavily ‘influenced’ by Sam Medways beautiful mark for 10/10.

Theres a lot of contextual simpering behind it about becoming and the transformative moment between the old and new state of a thing (object, idea, person, etc.) and how in-spite being two distinctive things that exist in their own right, they are still part of the same heritage, a continuation of each other…

…but I’m not sure about the internal proportions any thoughts?

back to this old chestnut… but this time I’m working out how best to publish it, same ideas as before…

working around the idea of a nonlinear interface for a website that uses eye tracking tech to build a print-on-demand publication authored by your individual interaction with the information, but also gives you the option to curate your own pull out quotes and images through manual selection as you move through the site… will probably all fall apart, but for now… what du recon? appropriate to the processes pretentious idealogical heritage?

In ‘Lords and Ladies’ (a Granny Weatherwax Discworld novel) Terry Pratchett talks about ‘circle time’. A time when the distance between worlds gets thinner, a time when you can almost taste the harmonics of the infinite other lives you might have lived branching off with every decision down alternate legs of the famed ‘trousers of time’. Although I’m using his playful vernacular to set up the premise of this post, as I approach my own ‘circle time’ I can’t help feeling the potential of it… and if you’re not down with fiction as a vehicle for deeper truth then we can’t be friends.

The 12 of april is something no matter what path I take in life I will always have in common with my other potential (including past and maybe future) selves. A point at which we all, to a certain extent, line up. The same could be said more widely for significant markers like new years. Do you not find that around those times you almost get an echo of what you feel your life could or ‘should’ have been? As a natural time of reflection there are plenty of logical reasons for this but personally I find Pratchetts musings an apt emotional metaphor for coming to terms with your own expectations, good and bad, of where you would be at that time. A way to make peace with missed opportunities.

To a certain extent at this time of year I still feel echos from the disappointment of a little girl over hearing class mates parents placating them with treats when they got home, so that they would go to my party (we were very young and I was very weird) and traces of the teenager that shared birthday outings with a girl far nicer and more popular than her at Thorpe Park and smiled through the agony of standing in line for hours because she wasn’t prepared to admit to herself that her body was crumbling beneath her… even though these events were a life time ago and all 3 of us have been distinctly different people. I guess everyone probably feels this way but maybe its because I don’t feel like the 3 people I have been in my short life have that much in common with each other that I find 24 so disturbing.

That scared little girl, that felt so stupid, left in september 2000 when she found a system that allowed her to excel at things outside of reading and writing. The mouthy, smart arse teen, that didn’t know how to deal with the situation she found herself in so ignored it and let resentment fill her up until she lashed out at anyone and anything, held on for much longer than she should have and getting rid of her was damn near a 3 year exorcism, but she went (thank goodness) and thats the issue I guess…

I as I am now am only about 3-4 years old and still only half a person, but it feels like I’m expected to have my entire life set out in front of me. As if the future is a series of dominos that I should have been carefully setting in place till now so that when the time comes the first one will drop and everything will fall into place, pre-ordaned by my grades and friendships, failed relationships and fondness for big macs, the measure of my entire worth as a human bean… and I don’t. I look out and the floor is empty because every time a pattern started to emerge I kicked it down and started over… and I think I’m glad I did.

Just hope that finally being on a better path is good enough for now and that I can leave all the ‘could have beens’ to their whispering.

FEED BACK WANTED

took me a million bloody iterations to get something that doesn’t make me feel physically sick to look at, but i still hate it.

images are not final, background colour is a poor imitation of off-white recycled stock, white details will be screen printed in gloss white ink. please tell me someones got a better idea because i’m stumped and triangular grids are a real bitch to work with.

ps. the top two rows of triangles on the front are the only ones visible when its folded into a hexaflexagon and they make sense in that context, i promise.
